Upcoming Lucasfilm Movies and Shows

During Disney’s Investor Call on December 10, 2020, Kathleen Kennedy took the stage to update us on some great new Lucasfilm content coming to Disney+ and theaters. Much of this new content is in the early stages, so it will be a while before we get to see it, but they sound like a lot of fun.

Disney+

Mandalorian has done so well, they have decided to make another season. Season 3 will be released Christmas 2021. And because it has been so popular, 2 spin-off series will also be coming to Disney+.

Rangers of the New Republic and an entire series about Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson). Both shows will take place during the Mandalorian timeline. At some point there will be a culminating event with a crossover of all 3 shows.

A spy thriller called Andor will be coming to Disney+ in 2022. Based on Cassian Andor from Rogue One, this will be a prequel of sorts to Rogue One. Cast will include Diego Luna, Alan Tudyk, Adria Arjona, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgård, Denise Gough and Kyle Soller. Production began 2 weeks ago and the series will have 12 episodes.

Ewan Mcgregor and Kathleen Kennedy announces the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi project at the D23 Sneak Peak at the 2019 D23 Expo.

At last years D23 Expo, Lucasfilm announced Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a new series for Disney+. Kennedy gave us a few more details today. It will take place 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. Hayden Christensen will also be part of the show, reprising his role as Darth Vader. Deborah Chow, director for season 1 of The Mandalorian, will be directing “Kenobi”, with production will begin March 2021.

The Bad Batch, a group of clone troopers first introduced in The Clone Wars, will be receiving their own show. This one was announced a few months ago, but we don’t have any more information than the logo and this short video.

Star Wars Visions is a series of 10 Star Wars shorts that will give a new cultural perspective to the world of Star Wars. The most interesting thing about this announcement is that they will be made by Japanese Anime studios. This will definitely be a different style than the other Star Wars stories, so it will be interesting to see.

Kennedy gave us just a few more Star Wars stories that would be coming to Disney+. “Lando” is in development and will feature stories about Lando Calrissian and will be created by Justin Simien. “The Acolyte” is another story we are very excited about. This show will be a mystery thriller about the final days of the high republic era. “A Droid Story” will introduce us to a new droid. R2D2 and C-3PO will be along for the ride, and as usual, something is bound to go wrong.

Also announced today is a new series based on the 1988 film Willow. Shooting will begin in March, with an expected release date in 2022.

Theatrical Releases

Lucasfilm has officially announced the final installment of the Indiana Jones series. Harrison Ford will be reprising his role. They will begin shooting in late spring 2021 with a release date in July 2022.

The next Star Wars feature film will be “Rogue Squadron”. Kennedy said this “new generation of star fighter pilots” will move us into the future of the Star Wars universe. We are still a few years out from this as it won’t be released until 2023. Taika Waititi is working on another new Star Wars feature. It is currently being written, so we are still a while out from that.

Although we already knew about some of these announcements, most were still rumors. We are so excited to have so many new Star Wars stories coming to Disney+. And if you want to know what Kevin Feige announced about the MCU, check out this article!
